How to do a remix?

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

A remix is the art that brings back older widely famous songs and converting them into new hits. a trend nowadays is to remix the 70's-90's songs by changing the original style and even adding or subtracting parts of the song to modify its vibe.

There is no need for special studies in the filed in order to be able to give a modern sound to your old favourite songs and there are the easy steps to do it yourself.

As you basically create a new song, it is important to differentiate yourself as a remixer and create your own style. However, let's not forget the intellectual property of the original songs. So do seek out for permission (written and officially) before launching your song publicly.

Choose the songs you like and find appealing. Think how you would change the vibe and how could you bring your personal touch on that. The catchy and top songs on the previous decades are the ones you should think of as no matter how much you'd remix (do try to not completely change the whole song to the point of no recognition) they'd always be present and recognisable in the memory of the public.

Listen carefully to the song you chose. What are the flaws or what are the improvements you see fit to be done? Is it the drums, the bassline, would it be interesting to stick a violin vibe? Note them down while taking into consideration the public you want to address to.

What feelings would you like the public to identify in your remix? What is the atmosphere you want to induce? How could you transmit that through music? Note everything down.

As you have previously obtained the rights to process the original song, you may as well ask for the original files of the recordings (voices, instruments divided into types). Start the play and select the ones you'd like to keep. This is a good moment to try to define your style, if you haven't got one.

Listen to other remixes of the same song for potential inspiration, yet don't let yourself get caught in reproducing the same style and flow. In the end you want to create something unique.

Listen to the others' ideas and adapt them to your style. Think of your style and what you like. That is the mark that will help you create something unique, representable for you and easy to recognise for the listeners.

At the end, listen to it with the open hearth and write down the emotions, feelings and vibe the result gives you. Is it what you want? Does it give you the line you wanted it to follow? Ask your friends and relatives for opinions, yet make sure they keep their objectivity on the line.
