Hashtags and How to Use Them

Updated: Mar 3, 2023

In one of our previous articles, we already talked about what hashtags are and what they in fact do. In this one, we’ll give some tips on how to use them in the most efficient way.

Hashtags are most efficient when used by many people, therefore it makes sense to stick to commonly used ones. However, don’t shy away from creating your own hashtag to make it easier for your audience to find you. Especially if you engage with your audience through raffles or challenges and encourage them to use your hashtags, the chances of growing your audience will increase.

Try to make your hashtags catchy and concise. Long ones are perceived as too crowded and confusing. It’s best to also stick to a specific hashtag for some time after launching it as it takes time for the hashtag to spread among users and changing it too often won’t allow it to establish itself on the social media platform. Also, using a lot of hashtags can make the post crowded and putting many directly into the running text might distract from the relevant information instead of highlighting the essentials.

Otherwise, you get creative with your personalized hashtags. Play around with rhymes, puns and words that have high affiliation with the field. Emojis can look nice, but might be less user-friendly as it might take time to insert the right one. Therefore, it’s best to stick to combinations of words.

You can also observe trending hashtags to get a feeling for what makes a frequently used hashtag attractive. Generally, it’s a domain that requires experience and the more you deal with it and practice, the better you’ll understand the finesse behind it.
